The city guide is a personal favorite medium of design, and I was incredibly excited in having this opportunity to design my own. For Communicating With Type, we were tasked to choose a city that we have visited in the past and create a guide booklet for visitors. I wanted to do something related to NYC, but since I already live here, I needed to go a bit above and beyond. Thus, the idea of designing multiple maps and locations came to be. As I’ve visited these neighborhoods countless times, I already had a library of information to go off of.
To ensure the booklet captured the essence of diversity and cultural vibrancy of these ethnic groups, I opted for individual colors for each region and vibrant, contrasting hues. I found that a combination of stylized sans-serif and serif fonts for the body paragraphs complemented this approach. Additionally, I wanted to juxtapose this with the sharp, modern design synonymous with New York City, influencing the maps and layout. This project marked one of my initial forays into editorial design, offering valuable experience in creating and producing print booklets.
