In my second-year course, Communicating with Type, we focused on projects exploring the importance of type in design. Font specimens provided a framework to study the basic foundations of type while acting as a creative outlet to explore type in various forms. We were tasked to create a tri-fold, double sided brochure of a font of our choice. While tri-fold brochures are often not the main choice for a type specimen, it opened up new ideas of physically interacting with the printed specimen.
I opted for Komet, designed by Jan Fromm and available in the Adobe Fonts library. With it’s variety of weights and styles, and modern, curved sans-serif aesthetic, this font quickly became a personal favorite of mine. While the original imagery linked with Komet on Adobe Fonts reflects a German influence inspired by the German space program, I sought to reinterpret it within the context of the Cold War space race era. Taking cues from vintage space race posters, I incorporated colors, typography, and illustrations evocative of that period. The design of both the front and back panels drew inspiration from vintage notebooks used in space programs, adding an element of authenticity to the overall aesthetic.
Upon opening the tri-fold brochure, viewers are greeted with introductory information, space-themed illustrations, and an exploration of various weights and styles. Opening the right flap reveals additional details, unveiling a transformed illustration of the planet and offering deeper insights into the font's characteristics. Finally, the back cover provides valuable information about the designer and concludes with essential colophon details.
