Beyond the Field In Plain Sight

April 2024

In the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program at the Binghamton University Art Museum (BUAM), I studied and discussed works produced by David Hammons, created art inspired by him, and planned a weekend exhibition of my work as well as work produced by the other two residents Bryan Fernandez and Santiago Parra.

One of my responsibilities for the exhibition was overall graphic design. I created a visual identity system with the font Asterisk Sans Variable, a font suggested by Santiago. Along with the background image of the posters also created by Santiago, which communicates our title, I created a series of posters in various colors, which were promoted throughout campus and other communication channels. The zine for the exhibition, the wall text, and the labels were created afterwards under this visual identity system. This project allowed me to explore exhibition and installation design, something I have never explored before to this extent. Creating a consistent identity across various forms of design centered around an exhibition was a daunting task that required much iteration and collaboration, though I have come out of it wanting to explore it more.

Special thanks to our supervisor Claire Kovacs for assisting us with this whole process, as well as Ellie Borzilleri, our videographer, and Dahlia Bekong, our production assistant, for additional support.
