Project Goal: Design a reissue cover for Harry, A History with a more contemporary approach for younger and new fans of the series, in anticipation of the HBO adaptation. The design centers the Hogwarts Express as a key visual reference to the original series.
Art Direction: Lisa Litwack
Harry, A History by Melissa Anelli was my first cover design at Simon & Schuster, taking the design from concept through final execution, with art direction from Lisa Litwack and panel critiques from the Gallery art department. My goal for the reissue was to bring more whimsy, charm, and magic to the cover while giving it a fresh look for a new generation of readers.
The project presented a particular challenge: as an “unauthorized true story” of the Harry Potter fan community, written by the founder of The Leaky Cauldron, the cover needed to immediately connect to the world of Harry Potter without using any intellectual property owned by the franchise. I approached this through visual cues associated with the series, including classic serif typography, a train traveling through the Scottish Highlands, and a subtle, sparkly atmosphere that suggests the magic of the original books.
The result is a warm, inviting, and nostalgic cover that feels distinctly magical while speaking to both longtime fans and new readers.
Previous iterations took a more vector-illustration-based approach, featuring original illustrations of the Hogwarts Express along with various other Harry Potter iconography. However, the direction shifted toward a more photorealistic, warm, and nostalgic look to appeal to a broader audience rather than a younger demographic alone, while also avoiding potential legal issues that could arise from depicting subjects too closely associated with the IP.
Once the main visual direction was established, I explored a range of typefaces and formatting options to find the right balance between familiarity, nostalgia, and a contemporary feel.
